oncology success stories

Charlie, Oncology Patient

Charlie

Charlie is an 8-year old German Shorthair Pointer who was adopted by his owners from a local humane society 7 years ago. Recently he was diagnosed with a high-grade sarcoma over his left caudal hipbone. Unfortunately the mass could not be removed entirely by surgery; therefore, Charlie's family veterinarian in Charleston referred him to the Oncology service at UVS. Our oncologists developed a definitive treatment plan for him that included radiation therapy as well as chemotherapy to aggressively treat the rapidly growing cancer. Charlie underwent 19 radiation treatments to the residual tumor and draining lymph nodes. He stayed here at UVS during the week and was able to go home on weekends. It has been six weeks since he has completed his treatments. In conjunction with his regular veterinarian, we continue to monitor him closely. Charlie was a joy to have in the hospital, and everyone enjoyed taking care of him!

Madeline, oncology patient

Madeline

Madeline, a 10-year old Labrador Retriever, first came to UVS for episodes of sneezing and bloody noses. After undergoing a CT scan, it was discovered that Madeline had a nasal mass. A biopsy also was performed, and the mass was diagnosed as a nasal squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer responds best to radiation therapy. Her owners opted for radiation therapy followed by chemotherapy. Madeline did very well through all of her treatments. Not long ago, Madeline’s family moved home to Seattle, where she continues to get follow-up care and enjoys life playing in the ocean!

Jennifer, Oncology patient

Jennifer

Jennifer, a 10-year old Golden Retriever, came to UVS three years prior to repair a cruciate ligament rupture. Earlier this year, Jennifer returned to UVS for a mass that had developed and grown rapidly on her right elbow. After a biopsy, it was discovered that the mass was cancer, a grade 2 spindle-cell sarcoma. Chest radiographs and an abdominal ultrasound were performed with no signs of metastasis. Jennifer’s owner wanted to avoid amputating her leg and opted for radiation therapy followed by surgical removal of the mass. Unfortunately, the second biopsy revealed the mass was more aggressive than we originally thought, so we started chemotherapy. Jennifer is tolerating chemotherapy well, and she is using her leg. She is a bundle of energy and doesn’t know she has cancer! We are all rooting for her and doing everything to keep her cancer under control.

Kasey, radiation patient

Kasey

Kasey is a 10-year old Labrador Retriever who was diagnosed with both a mast cell tumor and melanoma on her right rear paw. She had surgery at her regular veterinarian's office to remove the toe where the mast cell tumor and melanoma were located. She then came to the Oncology service at Upstate Veterinary Specialists for definitive radiation on her paw. Kasey has recently finished her radiation therapy - she was a great patient throughout her treatment and continues to do very well at home.

Sable, radiation therapy patient

Sable

Sable is an 8-year old, Lab mix that presented to the UVS Oncology service with a grade II mast cell tumor on her right flank area. Her referring veterinarian had already removed the tumor surgically. Here at UVS, we performed a CT scan and developed a radiation plan for her continued treatment. She began radiation therapy and stayed with us at UVS for over three weeks while her owners were away. Sable is one of the very few patients that has stayed the entire length of radiation treatment. We all fell in love with her! Sable received definitive treatment, which means she is currently cancer free!! Everyone at UVS looks forward to seeing Sable during her follow-up appointments.

Toby, chemotherapy patient

Toby

Toby, an 8-year old, Labrador Retriever, came to UVS in February 2005 as one of our first Oncology patients. She presented to us with Stage III B-cell lymphoma. The very next day, Toby started chemotherapy treatments that continued for six months. She did great throughout the entire chemotherapy protocol, and even better, she continues to be in complete remission today. Every six months, Toby comes in for a follow-up appointment to be sure she is still in remission. She is truly one of our favorite patients here at UVS!
