Is it an Emergency?
With the array of trouble pets can get into, and the various health conditions that can emerge, it can be difficult to know whether your pet’s signs express a true emergency. You can always contact Upstate Vet to ask questions about the care your pet needs, but the following signs are always concerning, and require emergency care:
Severe bleeding
You suspect your pet ingested a toxin or a foreign substance
Difficulty breathing
Sudden collapse or unconsciousness
Severe trauma (e.g., hit by a car, a fall from an elevated height, bite wounds)
Seizures, including first-time occurrences, episodes lasting more than three minutes, or multiple seizures in a 24-hour period.
Inability or straining to urinate
Fractures or joint dislocations
Lacerations or puncture wounds
Obvious signs of pain (e.g., vocalization, hiding, shaking)
Bleeding from the nose, mouth, or rectum, or blood in the urine or feces
Heat stress or heat stroke
Severe vomiting or diarrhea, especially when combined with other illness signs, such as fever, lethargy, abdominal distention, or pain
Pregnancy complications
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect when I arrive?
Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by a team member who will help you get your pet registered with us. Our triage team member will perform a brief assessment of your pet. If your pet has a life-threatening injury or illness, we may ask to bring your pet to our ICU for treatment to begin immediately. If your pet is stable, you will be asked to wait until one of our veterinarians is available and you will then be escorted into an exam room with your pet.
How long will the visit be?
Patients will be seen by a veterinarian in order of priority, with patients needing immediate lifesaving care taking priority over patients with stable non-life-threatening conditions. During your wait, a team member will periodically check in with you and your pet. If you feel your pet’s condition is worsening or they develop any further symptoms, please let a member of our team know so they can communicate this information.
Will I be allowed to stay with my pet throughout our visit?
We will be sure you are with your pet as much as possible. Certain procedures will require that we separate you and your pet. However, we will keep you informed every step of the way throughout the duration of your pet's care.
What if my pet is hospitalized?
If you are advised that your pet needs to be hospitalized, rest assured that we are fully staffed at all times. Each hospitalized patient is monitored continuously.
Visitation for hospitalized patients will be facilitated on a case-by-case basis. Our team will be sure to provide you with updates on your pet throughout their stay.
How can I be financially prepared for an emergency visit?
Your pet’s health is everyone’s first priority. However, we completely understand that our clients may have financial considerations as well. Our team will ask for your consent for any immediate critical care and recommended treatment plans. This helps ensure you are involved every step of the way during your pet’s care and that you are both financially updated and medically updated on your pet's wellbeing.
In addition, we aim to provide you with as many payment options as possible to allow you to make the best choices for your pet, including both CareCredit and Scratchpay. We also encourage you to explore pet health insurance in case a medical emergency should ever arise.
